San Francisco native, Eric Cross developed an interest in art at an early age. As a youth Cross studied mathematics and science, with special attention to geometry, which he has carried over into his present artwork. The economy of form, the simplicity of relationships between shapes and the correlationof this language spoke to him. He later realized that he perceived the world visually rather than in the traditional linear, linguistic, narrative manner.
Cross attended the University of California at Santa Barbara as an undergraduate, taking classes that interested him rather than meeting requirements for a particular major. Invariably this resulted in Eric taking some studio art classes, which eventually became his life's pursuit.
For Eric, the most successful representational patintings use strong abstracted elements to help construsct the illusion of representation. Similarly, successful abstract paintings use representation as a framework for accessing the content.
Eric's works attempt to blur the lines between abstract and representational art.
His use of geometry to depict the human form is extraordinary. "I often use the human figure because of the limitless geometry, the endless potential for expression, and the 'automatic' relationships between real humans and representations of humans. I almost never work from reference."
